The generalized disorders of cornification (previously termed the ichthyoses) constitute a
large, heterogenous group of inherited disorders. It is now possible to define at least 24
distinct genetic diseases within this group. At present, the underlying genetic or biochemical
cause is known for only a few of these disorders.
